Among likely leadership styles which you will meet in your career are Commanding Leadership and Pace-setting Leadership. But please remember to take caution in applying either of them; remember that both should be used sparingly, if at all.
- Commanding. This “do what I say” style demands immediate compliance. Of all the leadership styles, it is the least effective in most situations—although it has some application in turnaround situations and crises and with problem employees. However, using this style can damage morale, motivation, and creativity.
- Pace-setting. Pace-setting leaders set extremely high performance expectations for themselves and others. A focus on doing things “better, faster” sets a standard everyone else is expected to match. This works best for highly skilled and motivated people. Other people, however, may feel overwhelmed by relentless demands. Their self-esteem and morale may drop. Ultimately, organizations with pace-setting leaders may suffer because weary employees leave.
